Suppurative Arthritis and Osteomyelitis in Infants

Abstract
The records of 18 infants (1 to 12 months) with pyogenic infection, on the bones and joints who were admitted over a six year period were reviewed. There was no sexual predominance (males, 10 of 18)
The majority (16 of 18) of the infants had antecedent illness or were subjected to potentially infective procedures in the. perinatal period, especially in case of home delivery, upper respiratory infection and various other infections.
The systemic signs are not prominent on the new-born (under the age of 1 month) with only local manifestions of disease.
The most frequent local findings were swelling, tenderness and decreased motion. Soft tissue swelling was the most frequently noted early radiographic change.
Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 11 of 18 patients.
Six of the 18 infants had multiple bones or joints, or bones and joints infections. There was no death.
